What Is Geedup?

Geedup, officially Geedup Cothing., is a streetwear brand from Sydney, Australia. It is known for limited monthly drops, heavyweight graphics and a loyal community that treats every release like an event. Where Did Geedup Come From?

How Did the Idea for Geedup Start?

After leaving school, Jake studied graphic design and worked in a couple of design jobs. Around that time, he and his brother noticed that deadstock basketball jerseys and snapback caps were making a comeback in streetwear. They set up an online shop and Facebook page under the name Geedupclothing.org and started reselling.

About three months in, they received a cease-and-desist letter from Mitchell & Ness and Adidas, and the reselling business had to stop. Instead of quitting, the brothers used their customer community and Jake’s design skills to make their own clothing.

Jake designed the first Geedup sweater on his lunch break at work. The brothers put the design up for pre-order, sold the first pieces quickly, and then found a screen printer to make the garments. That small pre-order launched the brand.

How Geedup Was Built

Geedup started with no fashion background and very little money. Jake has said he even slept in the first store at times when he had nowhere else to stay. The brand was inspired by the American label Crooks & Castles.

Over the first seven years, Geedup opened two flagship stores. Growth was slow and profits were hard to come by at first, so between 2017 and 2019 Jake stepped back, re-evaluated the business and relaunched it. By 2019, Geedup was reported to be reaching million-dollar sales months.

Today, the brand is reported to make around $20 million in annual sales. It has grown through online drops, pop-up events and collaborations, and it now has teams working on the UK, US and African markets.

How Geedup Drops Work

Geedup does not follow the usual fashion calendar. It releases new collections as monthly “Deliveries”, such as Delivery 02/26 through Delivery 06/26. Pieces are made in limited quantities, and many do not come back once they sell out.

This model is a big part of the brand’s appeal. Jake has been open about building demand through exclusivity, and it shows: a pop-up during New York Fashion Week drew around 4,500 people to a venue that held only 300.
